Research project within TUM CREATE. Focussing on modelling and optimisation of architecture and infrastructure, urban systems simulation like traffic and power are the main research interests. Apart from that, a cognitive systems group deal with human computer interaction. 

About Us

Research Project 5 (RP 5) is one of ten research projects - or more accurately thematic areas - at TUM CREATE in Singapore. TUM CREATE is a research programme funded by the National Research Foundation (NRF) in Singapore. The scope of this research programme includes a variety of topics related to electro-mobility (e.g. battery technologies, vehicle design and engineering, infrastructure planning). In this context, RP 5 is specifically concerned with Modelling and Optimisation of Architecture and Infrastructure and consists currently of three groups: the Urban Simulation Group, the Cognitive Systems Group, and the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Group. TUM CREATE RP 5 is organised as follows:

The Urban Simulations Group is concerned with the analysis of the potential impact of electromobility on urban infrastructure and the environment from a complex systems perspective by means of modelling and simulation. The research deals with answering the question of what will happen if we replace hundreds of thousands conventional vehicles with electric vehicles in a city such as Singapore. The Scalable city-scale Simulation platform developed by the Urban Simulation Group is not just limited to electro-mobility simulation, however. The modular and distributed nature of the platform makes it an ideal platform for answering and exploring several other aspects future mobility as well.

Intelligent Transporation Systems (ITS)  will inevitably form a key part of future mobility. These systems, without embodying intelligence as such, aim to provide innovative services relating to different modes of transport and traffic management and enable various users to be better informed and make safer, more coordinated, and 'smarter' use of transport networks. Development of ITS systems require the work done in the Urban Simulations Group for exploring  various design considerations and answering fundamental  questions concerning the development of different components. It also requires the development of the next generation of intelligent systems that communicate and serve the needs of its users most effectively.

Through the development of the next generation service robotics, The Cognitive Systems Group, explores the various components that would be necessary to make future intelligent systems possible. Intelligent communication with human beings, processing of information perceived through different types of sensors through the use of knowledge representation and logical reasoning based on this representation of knowledge are some of the problems being explored by this group.
