Intelligent Control of Energy Storage in Smart Grids


Smart grids rely on the intelligent behavior of individual consumers and generators. In this project we are developing a system which intelligently controls how mobile or stationary energy storages are charged and discharged to support the stability of power grids. One objective of the project is to realize a technology for the integration into electric vehicles (EV) to perform smarter charging and intelligent Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) dispatch.

Objective & tasks

You will be part of a small research team addressing different aspects of this topic. One component of the system is the virtual power plant (VPP) operator who aggregates hundreds to thousands of EVs and offers their energy on the electricity market. The objective of the aggregator is to maximize its profits from providing energy/power capacity to the market. As the number and specifications of the EVs being connected to the VPP is constantly changing over time, the aggregator also needs to consider these dynamics in order to find a risk-minimizing bidding strategy. The goal of this thesis/internship is to develop an optimal and robust operation strategy for such an aggregator. For this purpose the following tasks should be accomplished:

  • Review on control strategies for virtual power plants and aggregators
  • Conceptual development of an optimization strategy for an aggregator
  • Implementation of the optimization algorithm
  • Proof of concept by applying developed algorithm in a case study
